Nathan Duignan is an honours student at the University of Sydney. His interests predominantly lie in the theory of dynamical systems and its application to physical phenomena. In particular, his most recent research is concentrated on an analysis of  Paleo-climatic records from ice-cores in an attempt to understand how the climate system can produce the stochastic behaviour observed.

Understanding time series of ice-core data and building models to reproduce ice ages

Paleo-climatic records from ice-cores reveal rapid transitions between warmer and colder climates in the past 100kyrs (so called Dansgaard-Oeschger events). Previous studies suggest that the data are compatible with a dynamical system driven by Levy-noise. This project asks: How can the climate system produce such stochastic behaviour?
