Dimitrio Sidi is an undergraduate Bachelor of Philosophy student at the University of Western Australia, majoring in Physics and Mathematics. With intentions to complete an honours in Applied Mathematics in 2016, Dimitrio is fascinated by the applications of mathematics in real world problems. Having completed a summer research program in 2014/2015 in the field of optical laser systems, Dimitrio shifted his focus to applied mathematics after completing a course by his current supervisor, Professor Neville Fowkes.

After experiencing the power of mathematics in modelling real world situations, Dimitrio felt a strong connection to the central tenets of applied mathematics, resonating deeply with the idea of approaching problems in a practical grounded method. He hopes to pursue a career in applied mathematics whereby he can use his problem solving skills in ways that have real world impact and hopes his research into the conservation of rhinoceroses in South Africa is just the tip of the iceberg.

Rhino Conservation Problem

The project looks at the rhino conservation problem and how we can maximise the population of rhinoceros in South Africa. This involves modelling the population dynamics of the rhinoceros and taking into consideration rhino behavior and typical population age structure. The aim of the project is to work out a regime whereby the population of rhinos can be maximised in a multiple rehabilitation center system.
